FERNDALE AND PARAT

SUNK
On the 15th of December
1944 a German convoy of
six ships crossed
Sognefjord under cover
of darkness with Ferndale in the lead. The convoy reached Krakhellesund, but the captain of Ferndale misjudged the strong current and the ship hits the Seglsteinenr reef hard. Later the rescue vessel Parat arrived, and Parat and Ferndale stayed here until noon on the 16th of December 1944 when nineteen allied Mosquito planes attacked them with cannon and rockets. The attack only lasted for a few minutes, but this was more than enough to set Ferndale and Parat on fire. One hour later another eight Mosquitos arrived and attacked the ships again. Both Ferndale and Parat were overwhelmed and the ships sank rapidly after the attack.

DIVING
The bow of Ferndale is pretty broken, but beyond a depth of 20m she starts to look like a ship. Parat lies much deeper, and from a depth of 40m at the stern of Ferndale you can look down on the wreck of Parat. A superb dive, probably the favourite of our guests.
